In the heart of George Town, the bustling Little India enclave and nearby China Town is an exciting place not only to buy the communities’ unique spices and products but also to experience a slice of local culture.
Just a skip away is Komtar Pacific shopping mall offering a different experience
altogether. Housed in the iconic 65-storey Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) tower, the spanking new mall is one of the many outlets offering the latest brands and fashions.
Adjacent to Komtar is Prangin Mall – a popular hangout for teenagers and the young at heart. It is here that you’ll find the latest Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong styles. Prices are affordable and the fashion is definitely whimsical, outrageous and flamboyant – by Malaysian standards, that is!
Also in the area is Gama – one of the oldest supermarkets in town.

About 20 minutes away from the city centre is Penang’s famed Gurney Drive promenade where Gurney Plaza, a massive “lifestyle shopping mall”, is located. Boasting of concept fashion stores, bookshops, IT specialty stores, home décor outlets, electrical appliance shops, a cineplex and karaoke centre, it is one of the most popular malls in town. The dining outlets here are extensive with the presence of various international coffee and fast food chains.
A stone’s throw away is Island Plaza – a modestly well-run mall featuring some hot brands.

For a tropical taste of island shopping, head to Batu Ferringhi – a mere 45 minutes away from Gurney Drive. At night, the tourist belt comes alive with stalls selling everything from food and wooden handicrafts to silver jewellery, totes and tees.
On the other end of the island in Bayan Lepas, you will find Queensbay Mall and Kompleks Bukit Jambul. While the former offers the best in cosmopolitan shopping with a myriad of top brands, the latter mainly offers communication and audio-visual gadgets and IT-related products.
At Sunshine Square, which is also in the vicinity, you will find mostly home-grown labels and some of the best of Malaysian fashion.
On the mainland, shopping is also quite a serious affair with Aeon, Megamall Pinang and Sunway Carnival being a popular hangout for teen shoppers.
